This tool help you answer two questions.
For seven groups of industry, which cities in the UK are the best?
For seven groups of industry, which industry is each city best at?
Our method is in development. It will improve with both time and your feedback.
This tool was built by Thomas Forth and Daniel Billingsley at ODILeeds, as part of a project with The ODI, The Digital Catapult, and InnovateUK.
Our city rankings draw data from three sources; tech events, scientific publications, and data such as local skills, business startup rates, and research and development spending.
You can download the raw data and see how each city's score is calculated (.xlsx). If you spot errors, or have improvements to suggest, please get in touch. These results are preliminary, and our results are experimental. Things are improving all the time.
We've written two blog posts that explain where we've innovated in this work. One explains how we use tech events data from three sources for the first time. Another explains how we use a preview of Microsoft's Academic Knowledge API to understand patterns in academic publications.
This tool isn't perfect, we think that Leeds is much better at data than it shows for example, but we're at a stage where it will improve most quickly if we share it. Maybe you'll spot some stupid mistakes that we've made, or maybe you've got some data that would improve our rankings. Let us know and we'll fix it.
At ODILeeds we're doing lots of work about investment, innovation, and cities in the UK. We've collected and visualised lots more data about the Internet of Things sector. We've helped TechCity with their TechNation report, and helped them to share Northern Tech investments data on Data Mill North. And we've mapped the digital sector for the Leeds City Region in much more detail.
If we can help you, or if you can help us, please get in touch.
